Hero Images
Mobile ready Hero Images
I wanted to bring attention to, and solicit comments, regarding recent work by the Inclusive Design team at Cambridge University (http://www.inclusivedesigntoolkit.com/) and Unilever regarding Mobile ready Hero Images.
It is difficult for a shopper to identify from an image on a eCommerce site, the size and variant of a product. When viewing on a Mobile device, it becomes even more difficult to understand not only the product details, but even to identify the brand.
The Inclusive Design team recommend that eCommerce images should communicate, Brand, product type, Variant and Size.
Traditional Pack Shots you find all over the web are simply not effective at communicating what the shopper needs to know.
A video that explains the concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1223GTQQctE
Traditional
Mobile ready Hero Image, basically a zoomed in image, that contains within the image, but not overlaying the product, a description of the variant that is on a color bar that represents the color of the variant, and the size, on a color bar, that shows the color of the brand.

Work has begun with GS1 to promote this design as an industry standard.
With an ever increase of eCommerce transactions moving to mobile, this could be a real game changer, but looking at it I think it could be just as important for Web based E commerce, where anything that makes a shoppers experience more convenient, like not having to read and look for important information should be most welcome.
